You don’t need a microscope to examine the DNA of our city. Melbourne’s DNA is embedded within its data: maps, stories, the information we collect, the projects we undertake.
At the City of Melbourne, data helps us understand our past and our present, and it guides our plans for the future.
Data is more than numbers – it tells us where we’ve come from, and where we’re going. Think of data – those micro bites of information – as our city’s DNA. And to help tell Melbourne’s story, we brought to life the city’s many data sets in Melbourne City DNA – an exhibition of emerging technology.
The ultimate aim of Melbourne City DNA is to help Melburnians connect on a deeper level to the city: its past, present and possible futures and help shape the decisions that guide its growth.
Hosted at the Melbourne Knowledge Week festival hub in 2018 and 2019, the Melbourne City DNA exhibit included:
a large, interactive, 3D-printed city model enriched with data projected onto it
virtual reality immersive experiences
augmented reality demonstrations
a series of interactive data screens with data visualisations and touch-screen maps.
Following the success of the exhibit and positive feedback from Melburnians, we are exploring how Melbourne City DNA could become a permanent feature within the Melbourne Town Hall for the community to enjoy. The design, development and delivery of this pilot service are planned for 2019-20.

Collaborating with the team at Urchin Associates, Moth & Threshold Design were engaged to produce a touring (Melbourne and Sydney) exhibition and retail space that reinforces the brand essence of Asahi. Taking inspiration from Asahi's 'Pungent Mouth' and Silver and Black branding, Moth developed a 3D explosion as the dominant product display solution.
Assisting with the curating of fashion and jewellery that fit the Asahi aesthetic, Moth also ensured that striking, contrasting lighting was used to dramatic effect within the space.
